Stamford, CT - (December 12, 2011) – Harbor Point, Stamford’s most exciting place to “live, work and play,” tells the on-going success story of the city’s revitalized South End.  Central to the community is up and coming Canal Street, a hub of activity with over 1,000 new residences, first-class office space, and newly arriving restaurants and retailers adding to the already impressive roster of tenants.

This December, Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide, one of the world’s largest hotel and leisure companies, takes occupancy of their nearly 300,000-square-foot World Headquarters at One Star Point, the southern end of Canal Street.

A headline attraction of the neighborhood arrives this coming spring with the opening of Harlan Social, a new gastropub restaurant from Stephen Lewandowski, the widely acclaimed executive chef of Manhattan’s Tribeca Grill.  As the most recent addition to the new wave of restaurants and retailers at Yale & Towne, Harlan Social joins other New York-based attractions including popular specialty grocer Fairway Market, Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, and Le Pain Quotidien.

Design Within Reach has opened their new corporate headquarters at 711 Canal Street, making a cross-country move to Harbor Point, where they have also opened their flagship retail studio of fine modern furnishings and accessories.  711 Canal Street is also home to Robeks Premium Fruit Smoothies, Go Green Dry Cleaners, Subway, and First Niagara Bank, with additional well-known restaurants and retailers about to set sail.

Harbor Point’s residential rental communities, each of which has its own unique character, have attracted upwards of 800 residents just since January 2011.  Two in the Canal Street area are The LockWorks and The Lofts at Yale & Towne.  “Our newest community, with 329 residences and a rooftop pool terrace, The Lockworks has seen amazing traffic since its mid-September opening and has already captured upwards of 90 leases,” reports Carl Kuehner III, CEO of Building and Land Technology, the Stamford-based real estate development firm behind Harbor Point’s success.

A wide diversity of tenants have been attracted to Canal street’s unique offerings.  Z Sails, makers of fine racing and cruising sails, just opened their brand-new facility at 860 Canal Street in November.  The U.S. Passport Agency is relocating its regional offices to 850 Canal Street in mid 2012, taking over a 21,000-square-foot space.  Making a renewed commitment to the community, Re:think Group, a full-service advertising and marketing agency, has renewed its lease at 700 Canal Street.

With its sophisticated mix of residential, retail, and restaurant offerings in a vibrant downtown ambiance, Canal Street is the site of the former Yale Lock factory, which for over a century gave Stamford its moniker as “The Lock City”.  Now beautifully renovated as part of a LEED-ND GOLD environmentally certified design, its historic buildings create an eclectic blend of old and new.

Notes Mr. Kuehner, “Canal Street offers something for everyone – Harbor Point residents and business professionals as well as visitors to the area.”  The neighborhood’s easy access is an added advantage, located  just off Interstate 95 and a short walk or shuttle ride from the Stamford Transportation Center.
