Fairfield County residents to rappel 22 stories for addiction awareness

October 5, 2016

More than 150 people will raise awareness for opioid and drug addiction by rappelling 22 stories off of the Beacon in Harbor Point on Saturday.

The event is part of the national nonprofit Shatterproof’s third annual Shatterproof Challenge Rappel, a nation-wide series of rappel events that raises money to reduce the devastation that addiction to alcohol, opioids and other prescription and illicit drugs causes to families.

“The Shatterproof Challenge brings people together to conquer their fears,” said Shatterproof founder and CEO Gary Mendell. “The hardest step in recovery is the first one – just like in a rappel. After that, it’s one step at a time until you safely hit the ground surrounded by friends and family.”

The rappel event will include a ceremony at 10 a.m., hosted by Mendell, Stamford Mayor David Martin, state representative Jim Himes and Miss Connecticut Alyssa Taglia.

Those rappelling off the Beacon on Saturday include more than 150 individuals and corporate teams from all over Fairfield County with personal stories of addiction. Each of these participants raised a minimum of $1,000 to get a chance to rappel off the 22-story apartment complex at 1 Harbor Point Drive.

Rappelling begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and continues until 4 p.m.
