Harbor Point set to serve up Mexican-themed successor to Paloma

May 5, 2017

The latest addition to the Harbor Point menu is set to dock this summer in one of the most prominent locations in the South End complex.

Mexicue, a Mexican and barbecue restaurant with two Manhattan eateries, is scheduled to open by early July at 15 Harbor Point Road. It will succeed the Latin-influenced Paloma restaurant, which operated in the same space from July 2014 until December.

“As we were looking at markets outside New York, we saw a very similar demographic to the people who enjoy lunch and dinner at Mexicue in the city,” said Mexicue founder and President Thomas Kelly. “It felt like the right fit. At Harbor Point, there’s a good mix of young office workers and families and residents.”

The new establishment will occupy some 5,000 square feet on two levels. The interior will include bars on both floors, and the restaurant will also use outdoor seating.

Harbor Point comprises Mexicue’s first location outside New York City. The business started in 2010 as a food truck in Manhattan and Brooklyn, before opening brick-and-mortar locations at 1440 Broadway in 2014 and 225 Fifth Ave. in 2015. Another Mexicue in Manhattan is set to open next week at 160 Eighth Ave.

Mexicue will join a thriving restaurant row on Harbor Point Road that includes Sign of the Whale, Boothbay Lobster, Bareburger, World of Beer and Fortina. Fellow newcomer Zona Roastery and Cafe is scheduled to open this summer at 24 Harbor Point Road. Fifteen restaurants now operate at Harbor Point.

“I’m definitely well aware of all those great concepts,” Kelly said. “We will fit into that community of restaurants really naturally.”

Officials at Harbor Point’s main landlord, Building and Land Technology, cited Mexicue’s arrival as another sign of the vitality of the area.

“We see this as yet another strong amenity which enhances the live-work-play environment we’re proud to have fostered at Harbor Point,” Ted Ferrarone, chief operating officer of BLT, said in a statement. “As Harbor Point continues to emerge as Connecticut’s leading waterfront destination, we’re thrilled to add another great element to the large list of sought-after restaurants and retailers here.”
